When the mucus membranes in your respiratory tract try to fight off infections and inflammations, phlegm is formed. It is slightly different from mucus, as it comes from the lungs and not the nasal passages. It can be the byproduct of a simple seasonal flu or it can be the result of allergies or sinusitis. It can also be caused by viral or bacterial infections such as influenza, bronchitis, or pneumonia.
Phlegm Colours & different diseases
a) White colour of phlegm would indicate a healthy body free of infection.
b) light yellow phlegm could be a symptom of a viral infection that occurs in the upper respiratory tract. And phlegm of dark yellow in color it could be indicative of a bacterial infection or an infection in the lower respiratory tract.
c) Green phlegm is generally seen in people who have been infected with pneumonia.
d) Phlegm that is brown in color is often associated with people who smoke excessively.
e) Red Colored Phlegm is because of blood indicates bronchitis or tuberculosis.
Remedies for phlegm
• Add one teaspoon of ginger in a glass of hot water. Put a pinch of ground cloves and cinnamon in it. Let it soak for some time. After filtering, drink it.
• Add half teaspoon of turmeric powder in one cup of hot milk/tea, Add two teaspoons of honey and a pinch of black pepper to it. Stir the solution well and drink it hot.
• Mix approximately 2 teaspoons of lemon juice and a tablespoon of honey with a cup of hot water.
• To prevent creating more mucus unnecessarily, don’t eat any dairy products such as milk, cheese, yogurt, or ice cream. avoid oily fried foods and don’t smoke ,avoid heavy meal at night.
